The Verger (Sum-up)

Our short story comes from a writer was was extremely popular in the 1930s. 'The Verger' is a  story by Somerset Maugham, a British playwhight, novelist and short story writer, who here explores class tensions and changes in society.

Albert Edward Foreman is a verger since sixteen years. He like his job and do it as good as he can. Recently the vicar has died and a new one had been appointed. Albert Edward regretted his predecessor because the new one always wanted to control everything. The vicar has a special talent, which is to make babies stop crying when he is holding them. He wants to talk to Foreman. He is surprised to see the two churchwardens with him. He seems for him, that the two men did what the vicar want, but don’t agreed with him. Before being a verger, Foreman was a servant in very good houses. The vicar told Foreman, that he has heard that he couldn’t read or write. Foreman confirms it. The vicar told him, that it is impossible to have a verger who cannot read and write. Foreman doesn’t want to learn, so he will have to go. He was polite until he was outside of the church, there he became sad. He doesn’t want to be servant again, because now he has been his own master. He wants a cigarette but cannot found a shop anywhere.

The next day he opens a little shop and set up a business as a tobacconist and newsagent. Albert Edward did very well. With the time he opens more shops and becomes richer. One day the banker told him, that he should invest all his money. The only thing he has to do is to sign the transfers, but because he can’t read that becomes a problem. The banker is very surprised to see that this successful man can’t read or write. He is wondering what he would now been, if he could read and write. Albert Edward answered that he would be a verger.

The Verger

The verger written by W.S Maugham is very entertaining and easy to understand. This story tells us how a person who is not even educated can be successful in life. The verger was able to seize the opportunity that came before him at the right time and that is what made him successful. The story of the verger ends with a line that "if I was educated i would have been a verger in the church".This line in my opinion is a little humorous as it tells us that if the protagonist of the story had been educated then he might have not become as successful as he was now .This tells us that education can not always make you successful ,and there are other factors also that help you to become successful. This  message has been conveyed  very clearly  by the author through the story of the verger.

The Verger

The Verger, written by William Somerset Maugham is simple and beautifully written . The short story revolves about Mr.Albert Edward who was a verger in a happening church and later becomes a successful businessman . The success in the verger's life would not have been possible without the newly appointed Vicar. This story is simple BUT there are a number of opinions one can make after reading the story. I personally believe that though the verger was quite naive and simple but he surely had some business sense. He immediately grasped the opportunity and invested his savings in opening a tobacco shop. Also luck played a major role in this venture, had he not craved for a cigarette he would have never thought of opening a tobacco shop. I reckon that in some way it does brings a message that education does not guarantee success. The irony is that had Albert been educated he would still be the verger of St.Peter's.On the contrary it was his illiteracy that made him successful. Obviously hard work also.

Three days ago, I just finished reading "The Diary Of A Young Girl". I really appreciate the confidence Anne was having in writing a diary in such tough times. But, I would ask Bineeta Ma'm to give an answer to the query that I am going to present now -
At some dates, it appears that Anne is very much afraid of her situation in the Secret Annexe, thinking that she might get caught up by the Gestapo.......but at some dates it appears as if life has been too easy for her there.....don't you think that this difference in thoughts might confuse the reader not allowing him or her to get the feeling of pitiness that they must get on reading a diary such as this ? He or she might not think about Anne's position liniently or softly?
