The Verger

The Verger, written by William Somerset Maugham is simple and beautifully written . The short story revolves about Mr.Albert Edward who was a verger in a happening church and later becomes a successful businessman . The success in the verger's life would not have been possible without the newly appointed Vicar. This story is simple BUT there are a number of opinions one can make after reading the story. I personally believe that though the verger was quite naive and simple but he surely had some business sense. He immediately grasped the opportunity and invested his savings in opening a tobacco shop. Also luck played a major role in this venture, had he not craved for a cigarette he would have never thought of opening a tobacco shop. I reckon that in some way it does brings a message that education does not guarantee success. The irony is that had Albert been educated he would still be the verger of St.Peter's.On the contrary it was his illiteracy that made him successful. Obviously hard work also.
