'The Portrait of a Lady' is a story by Khushwant Singh in which he tries to summarize the character of his 'grandmother'. He described the way in which his grandmother reacted to the city's atmosphere when she shifted from her village to the city. I liked the way in which Khushwant Singh has presented his grandmother's character in a child-like manner in the beginning of the story. I also liked the sparrows' attachment to the grandmother. I failed to understand that why his grandmother lived a silent life when she had many people to talk to her and why she was not able to adjust to the city life even when she had been living in the city for about fifteen years.
